The shoe thrower has been hailed a hero in Iraq and elsewhere in the Arab world and yet, what’s this?
Muntadhar al-Zeidi's life is in danger if he stays in Iraq, Geneva-based lawyer Mauro Poggia told The Associated Press. "He is in danger over there," Poggia said in a telephone interview Monday. "He's also in danger in other Muslim countries because people who support his action could try to make him a martyr."
He reportedly will seek asylum in Switzerland, although one of the journalist's three brothers denied he wanted to leave Iraq.
If true, this is kinda bad. Why would anyone seek shelter in Switzerland, when this country is a democratic one? Iraq is. Democratic, isn’t it?
If false, this is kinda bad. Muntadhar al-Zeidi has been jailed since December 14. If a shoe thrower can languish in jail that long (and he did not even hit his target), imagine what could happened if you’re charged with throwing a pie and causing a holy mess on somebody’s face.
I do wonder if the Iraqis are actually handling this more adroitly than we thought. Keep the guy in jail until inauguration day. By noon, there will be a new president, so they would not officially offend a sitting US President if they let the shoe thrower go. Is that it?
