Thomas Nides, Morgan Stanley’s chief administrative officer and chief operating officer, is in talks to take a job in the U.S. State Department, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
Nides, 49, is a candidate for deputy secretary of state for management and resources, according to the person, who declined to be identified because talks are ongoing. The job is held by Jacob Lew, who was tapped to be the next leader of the White House Office of Management and Budget. Nides hasn’t taken the position and remains at Morgan Stanley, the person said.
Nides was chief of staff for Connecticut Democratic U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman’s failed vice-presidential campaign in 2000 and worked for former House Speaker Thomas Foley. He’s an ally of Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack, having been Mack’s CAO at Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse First Boston.
