US Embassy Egypt: 18 Flights and 2,300+ Evacuees So Far, No Evac Flights on Feb.4

Approximately 300 citizens were evacuated in State-Dept chartered flights out of Cairo on Thursday, February 3.  We understand that over 2,300 individuals were evacuated since the operation began on January 31.

Two flights left on Thursday, February 3, 2011. That makes a total of 18 flights since the Cairo operation began on January 31.

Here is an Update on U.S. Citizen Services Egypt:

There were two U.S. government chartered evacuation flights Thursday, February 3.  Based on reduced demand for our flights and the availability of commercial flights, we currently have no evacuation flights planned for tomorrow, Friday, February 4.

As of this afternoon, we have evacuated more than 2,300 U.S. citizens and their family members.

We will continue to assess the need to resume flights.  We encourage all U.S. citizens wanting to leave Egypt to go to the airport after curfew is lifted.

We understand that there may be U.S. citizens who cannot make their way to the airport.  We ask that those citizens and their friends and families contact the U.S. Embassy in Cairo or the State Department in Washington.  We will alert local authorities to cases where U.S. citizens are in imminent physical danger.

We can confirm that some U.S. citizens have sustained injuries and we are providing all appropriate assistance in Cairo and in our evacuation destinations.  (Frankfurt, Larnaca, Istanbul and Athens).

In view of recent incidents involving foreign journalists in Egypt, the Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizen journalists in Egypt to enroll their trip and contact information with us via our Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), accessible through our website:  www.travel.state.gov.

Q:  What about the 4 a.m. Twitter message?

The Bureau of Consular Affairs sent a “Tweet” at 10 p.m. Eastern Time based on a previously-issued warden message that urged U.S. citizens wishing to depart Egypt aboard U.S. government-chartered flights to proceed to the airport immediately.  The guidance intended that citizens travel to the airport immediately after curfew hours in order to board planned evacuation flights for today.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs Twitter account has been providing regular updates on the US Government evacuation of U.S. citizens in Egypt.
