U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Jim Jeffrey has been tapped to become U.S. envoy to Iraq, the largest U.S. embassy in the world (but not for long).
Stuart Jones, currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary of state for Europe, managing the Balkans will reportedly be DCM in Baghdad (he will succeed Robert Ford whose nomination is currently snared in Senate hold and jam).
Cameron Munter, currently the counselor for political-military affairs in Baghdad and formerly the U.S. ambassador to Serbia, is reportedly slated to succeed Jones as the next Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe with the Balkans portfolio.
Current DCM at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv Luis Moreno will reportedly succeed Munter in Baghdad as the POL/MIL counselor.
Ambassador Karl Eikenberry will keep his chair in Kabul.
Deputy Ambassador to Afghanistan Francis Ricciardone, will reportedly be nominated to succeed Jim Jeffrey as ambassador to Turkey (Ricciardone was previously DCM in Ankara)
Earl Anthony "Tony" Wayne, the current Coordinating Director for Development and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and one of its "Assistant Ambassadors" (also previously US Ambassador to Argentina) is reportedly slated to succeed Ricciardone as deputy ambassador.
US Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron Hume is expected to succeed Anne Patterson as chief of mission in Pakistan. No word yet on where Patterson is going.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for ASEAN Affairs Scot Marciel is rumored to be a contender to succeed Hume as envoy to Indonesia
So hey! There's a job opening for a DAS in the EAP bureau.
In the meantime, the big news here is what's going to happen to Ambassador Hill, who had a contentious Senate hearing barely a year ago for that gig in Baghdad. On May 12, Laura Rozen reported that U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Chris Hill is a leading contender to become dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.
My source says that Ambassador Hill was at the Korbel School earlier this month to chat about the Dean position, however no one has been chosen yet. The vote should be completed sometime before the first week of June when the school year is over.
So stay tuned! We should hear more about this in the next couple of weeks or so.
I'm just adding this now -- but over in the -Stans, the U.S. ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Tatiana Gfoeller is reported to be on her way out, too. Ambassador Gfoeller was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic on August 22, 2008. She's a career diplomat so her normal term of office should end in summer 2011. Defending herself from charges that she ignored the former opposition for the sake of maintaining the U.S. air base there, The Bug Pit quotes the ambassador:
On a personal note I would like to point out that all of the main opposition leaders have received numerous invitations to my home. I don’t know how many ambassadors you know personally, but I would have to confess that probably among ambassadors, I tend to be a very informal person. So I tend to like to invite people just over for a cup of tea to my residence to talk things over, or to a reception or do some kind of get-together in a very informal way.
In retrospect probably it would have been good for me personally to continue that practice which I’ve been doing with the opposition, but also to make more formal calls on them in their offices or wherever their place of business was. But I can assure you that now I’m definitely often in the offices of all of the members of the provisional government. In fact today I was there all day.
